In an increasingly competitive market place, it is more important than ever for Local Authorities to have a clearer understanding of the particular needs of the accommodation sector within their own areas — and of the development potential which exists in their area in order to attract investment. This calls for better information and analysis — at the local level so that the right types of development (in terms, for example, of scale and type of hotel) can be attracted to the right locations — at the right time. By working together with Tourism South East and its partners:

• gaps in hotel performance and other data requirement needs can be filled;
• existing sites, perhaps already identified e.g. in Local Development Frameworks — can be further assessed and, if unsuitable, ‘released’ to alternative uses;
• appropriate sites/developer interest can be identified;
• local authority hotel development strategies can be formulated;
• new investment can be quickly attracted, and longer term,
• policy can be amended and research can support the Local Development Frameworks.
