Tourism Profile in the South East

The South East of England is the economic powerhouse of the UK. It is home to many European and UK head offices and a large number of specialist industry and service sectors. Business is attracted to the region not only because of its proximity to Europe and major domestic markets, but also because the south east offers an exceptional quality of life for its employees.

Over a third of the region is designated an area of outstanding natural beauty. It has the newest National Park in the UK in the New Forest and a national park in-waiting in the South Downs. The extent and quality of the rural and coastal environment offers opportunities for leisure and outdoor activities on every resident’s doorstep. If sailing is your thing there is over 1,628 km’s of coast. If a more cosmopolitan lifestyle is your preference then the regions major cities offer a range of theatres, galleries, restaurants and high class shopping facilities.

For families there is a wide choice of education establishments with some of the best private, public and international schools.

The qualities that help the region to attract successful businesses and visitors can also offer a range of lifestyle opportunities for your employees and their families and help you to recruit and retain the best management teams for your property.

The region can boast over 18 universities and colleges running degree and diploma courses in hospitality, catering and hotel management including Oxford Brookes, The University of Surrey and the Southampton Institute.

The economic success of the region has created areas where there are labour supply issues. These areas have been clearly recognised and mapped by the Regional Tourist Board and the Regional Development Agency who have put in place a pan-regional tourism skills network driven by Tourism South East, SEEDA and People 1st to improve the skills of those working in the South East’s tourism industry.

In addition there is a comprehensive network of dedicated training providers working to support the industry with recruitment, retention and skills development.
